It's Time to Get Scotchy
Stogie Club Hosts a Stogie and Scotch Tasting |
Whiskey, the "water of life," as translated from the Gaelic "uisge beatha," was first documented in Scotland during the 15th century. Friar John Corr is documented as buying the first 500 kg. of malt, so his monastery could produce it. Historical records show this is where the production of whiskey began, in the monasteries.
On Thursday, June 22, the Stogie Club will explore the wide world of scotch in the Sportsman's Club. Master Scotch Distiller Ian MacMillan, from Burn Stewart Distillers, LTD, will be at the M.A.C. to present seven different scotches for tasting. Cigars by Gerard Ezvan of Jon's Pipe Shop and lavish hors d'oeuvres will also be provided. A signature bar will be available to purchase additional drinks.
The evening begins at 6 p.m. with an hors d'oeuvres hour. At 7 p.m. MacMillan will lead members through a guided tour of scotch. MacMillan has worked in the industry for more than 30 years and now manages three Burn Stewart single malt distilleries. Some of Scotland's finest malts are now produced by Burn Stewart thanks to MacMillan's depth of knowledge.
Since its inception more than 500 years ago,
whiskey has evolved and developed into a worldwide industry. It hasn't always been so widely produced. Whiskey was not produced commercially until the 17th century, and even then small-scale domestic production was prominent. It was seen as essential to sustain rural economies in the harsh Scottish environment. In 1823 the Spirit Act made it legally possible to produce large volumes of whiskey, and many blends came to London for promotion. This helped lay a foundation for the Scotch whiskey industry today.
Explore some of the world's finest malts at this two-hour tasting. Price is $20 for both members and non-members.
An order form will be given to members at registration to purchase individual bottles of scotch. Call 314-539-4470 for reservations. |
