Take the Plunge
Help Your Child Swim Faster at Downtown Club’s 2007 Free Clinic

Cold days and little access to a pool can prevent a lot of competitive swimmers from getting water time in the winter. Instead of letting your child’s swimming skills wane during the colder months, the Downtown Clubhouse is bringing its popular swimming clinic back for the second year in a row. This six-week workshop is intended to help kids, from first to eighth grade, who already know the basics of swimming and want to focus on improving their skills. Classes will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sundays, from Jan. 7 to Feb. 11, barring a Rams playoff game.

Richard Nix will instruct the program. Nix, who coached under former Athletic Director Carl O. Bauer, wants to pass on Bauer’s coaching philosophy. Bauer is nationally recognized as the “father of age-group swimming” and had an innovative approach to coaching competitive swimmers.

“Last year was very successful, and it was a better than expected attendance, so we’re looking toward doing it again in 2007 and even hoping for a greater number of competitive and active swimmers,” Assistant Athletic Director Rick Schneider said.

Bauer’s method of coaching focuses on the fundamentals of swimming. The goal is to help the kids achieve good technique in all four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and the butterfly stroke. The clinic will achieve this by breaking the strokes up into small parts. The workshop will include a lot of drills and focused training, not miles of swimming. Bauer’s philosophy was to focus on swimming quality, not endurance.

This class is specifically tailored for children who already know how to swim but want to swim faster and better. Space is limited, so hurry and sign your child up now. Call Rick Schneider to reserve a spot today, 539-4434.
