Goodfellowship Day Party, Saturday, Feb. 24

With 103 years of history, the Missouri Athletic Club prides itself on tradition. Sometimes, however, tradition can't overcome changing tastes and trends. The annual Goodfellowship Day Party is among the M.A.C.'s oldest traditions and continues to be a popular event at the Club. With free beer, food and activities, why wouldn't it be popular? Make plans now to attend this year's party on Saturday, Feb. 24. Activities begin at 10 a.m.
Goodfellowship Day began as the Hall of Health’s Year-End Jamboree in the 1930s. Longtime Athletic Director Carl Bauer started the Hall of Health outings in the ‘20s. Although these outings switched locations three times, they were always complete with copious amounts of sports, food and beer. The Hall of Health excursions were discontinued in the late 1960s, but the Goodfellowship Party has survived the decades.
To this day, athletics are the focal point of the Goodfellowship Day Party. This year’s party will include competitions in swimming where members can challenge any of the Club’s records. If you like water but prefer to stay above it, there will also be a 500 m. and 2,000 m. row contest. You can put your muscles to the test in a bench press battle. Basketball players can compete in a three point contest and golfers can try the closest to the pin competition. Appropriate events will be broken up according to age, gender and weight class.
As tradition calls, winners and losers alike still gather for a rewarding buffet of meats, salads and hors d’oeuvres along with foamy, creamy beers after the competitions are over. Outside of the camaraderie, the best part of Goodfellowship Day is that it’s free! If you’re a new member or have never come out for this celebration before, don’t miss out! The Goodfellowship Day is a tradition you won’t want to miss. The M.A.C. encourages you to come out and compete, no matter what your fitness level is.
