Artist of the Month
When
Vic Mastis was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, she knew her
passion for art could no longer but put on hold. The mother of two,
former beauty shop owner and March Artist of the Month had put her
art on hold as she started and raised her family in St. Louis. Once
she was diagnosed, she knew her art could wait no longer.
Mastis pulled out her old supplies from when she took art classes
at Jefferson College and Meremac Community College and headed to
Kansas City to the Pastel Convention. She took workshops with many
recognizable artists. In 1998, she founded Gateway Pastel Artists,
a society to unite artists interested in pastel media through the
usage of programs, critiques and technical support from one another.
Not satisfied by simply doing oil paintings, Mastis experimented
with materials that were shimmery, to add glitz and glitter to her
pieces. She finally came up with her technique of layering gold
leaf with oil glazes, which achieved the illuminating look she was
after.
If you are interested in purchasing any of Mastis' work, please
contact Patti Cundiff at 314-539-4429.
