Professional ballroom dance instructor Susan Nyemchek will teach the classes. Nyemchek tailors each class to your individual experience level. The first part of the class will be devoted to beginners. The second part will teach more advanced steps. Beginners are encouraged to give the second part a try, as Nyemchek’s assistants will aid those who need extra help. Ballroom dance lessons can be a great way to meet new members at the Club, and to spend quality time with your dance partner. The price for Dance Club members is $40, and for non-Dance Club members it is $45. Lessons are from 7-9:25 p.m., Tuesdays, July 22- Aug. 12. For reservations, call Courtney at 314-539-4402.

Friday, July 18

Most people don’t realize that during WWII the U.S. government brought over 400,000 German and Italian POWs to the United States. Beginning in 1942, more than 15,000 of these enemy soldiers were sent to Missouri and held in 30 camps around the state. Contrary to common expectations, the camps were relatively pleasant places, and the government was criticized for treating prisoners too well. The POWs had a great deal of freedom and opportunity for recreation. They worked (for pay!) on local farms, sometimes completely unguarded. Many friendships grew out of this interaction between prisoners and residents, some of which lasted decades after the war. Through photographs and stories from those who experienced it firsthand, David Fiedler tells of the fascinating, yet little-known story of when the POWs came to Missouri, and how the residents reacted when they came face-to-face with the enemy.
