Gateway to Glory
The St. Louis area and the Missouri Athletic Club have a long and storied tradition with the Olympic games. The proud history dates back to 1904, when St. Louis hosted the first Olympic games in the United States. The Games were the catalyst for the formation of the Missouri Athletic Club in 1903. Athletes and officials from the Club participated in the 1904 Olympics, while dignitaries from around the world stayed at the MAC throughout the Games.
More than a century later, the MAC continues to celebrate the Gateway’s city’s Olympic spirit. On Oct. 29, the MAC will host Gateway to Glory, honoring local athletes from the Missouri and southern Illinois who have recently returned from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as former Olympians from the 1950s to the present. These accomplished athletes will be inducted into the U.S. Olympian & Paralympian Association, Missouri/Illinois Chapter (USOPA). Olympic athletes scheduled to appear are Bill Toomey, 1968 Decathlon Gold Medalist; Jackie Joyner-Kersee, multiple Olympic and World Record-Holder; Sara Haskins, 2008 Triathlete and former Secretary General of World Olympians; three time distance running Olympian, Craig Virgin.
If you would like to attend, please call 314-539-4470 for a reservation. The cost to attend is $100 for members and $125 for guests. |
New Evening Spinning Class
The Downtown Clubhouse is offering a new evening spinning session on Thursday nights beginning at 5:30 p.m. The new session begins Thursday, Oct. 9, and will be taught by John Wohlgemuth. Spinning is a great workout for anyone because it is a low impact sport. It is a high energy workout performed on stationary bikes to adrenaline-inducing music and led by an enthusiastic instructor. Spinning is a form of resistance training, so you're building long, lean muscles in your legs and butt to replace the fat you burn off. No reservations are necessary. For more information, contact Rick Schneider at 314-539-4434. |
