Hall of Fame Banquet
A new class of the Club’s most distinguished athletic figures will be inducted into the Missouri Athletic Club’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, March 6. A dinner will be held in their honor in the Missouri Room. The 2009 class was selected by the Hall of Fame Committee, who reviewed nominations from MAC members. Inductees into this year's Hall of Fame include: Mark Belew, Gary Gaertner Jr., Jim Halliburton, Bobby Gresham, Bill McGreevy, John McCartney, Monsignor Louis Meyer and Jim Sheets. Bracketology Featuring Rick Majerus
March Madness is just weeks away from tip off. Before you prepare to fill out your bracket, take some advice from an expert. Saint Louis University basketball coach Rick Majerus knows what it takes to be successful in the Tournament. He will be at the MAC on Monday, March 16, to preview March Madness. Majerus has a successful record in the Tournament. He led 11 teams to the NCAA Tournament with 10 of those teams advancing at least past the first round. He led Utah to the Elite 8 in 1997 and to the championship game in 1998. In 1977, he was the assistant coach at Marquette when they won the national championship. Don’t miss this opportunity to sit down with Coach Majerus and gain insight into the Tournament. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Clubhouse. Schweich to be Featured at Speaker Series
Thomas Schweich will be the featured speaker at the Speaker Series event on Tuesday, March 3, at the Downtown Clubhouse. The MAC Speaker Series offers members and guests a chance to enjoy a delicious lunch while listening to interesting experts discuss a variety of topics. Schweich served the Bush administration as the ambassador for counternarcotics and justice reform in Afghanistan, as the government’s deputy assistant secretary of state and acting assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and chief of staff to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. Speaker series events begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at 12:15 p.m. The cost to attend is $20, which includes lunch and parking. To make a reservation, call 314-539-4470. |
Knockout Night at the MAC
There are still several reservations open for the fourth annual MAC Boxing Championships. Don’t get knocked out of a night of fun and camaraderie. Make your reservation now before the event is sold out. Top boxers from around the St. Louis area will showcase their talent at the Club. The ultimate fight night will take place in the Missouri Room on Thursday, Feb. 26. The night includes a steak dinner with all of the trimmings. Cocktails and cigars begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the matches at 8:15 p.m. After 7 p.m., cocktails are by subscription only. There will be beer bucket specials all night. Battle of the Board
Head to West on Friday, Feb. 27, to get a front row seat for a showdown of the Board on the tennis courts. Past President Scott Engelbrecht and Governor Margaret May will take on Governor Jim McMullin and his wife Mina in a match that will raise money to benefit the MAC Charitable Society, a Club Within the Club at the MAC. A tough battle should ensue between the two teams, and a few surprises will be thrown in including proper English tennis attire, a wooden tennis racket and a “T-2000” aluminum racket. A professional exhibition by Kim Steinmetz and her crew of pros will follow the main event. The match begins at 6:30 p.m., and all members and guests are encouraged to attend. Admission is free. Donations for the 2009 charities, Angels’ Arms, CHADS and Lift For Life Gym, will graciously be accepted. Representatives from the charities will be on hand to share information and stories about their charities. Cash, checks and chits will be accepted. Run For the Board
The MAC Nominating Committee is currently seeking qualified candidates for the Board of Governors election. The MAC would like you to consider or someone you know as a possible Board candidate. Serving on the Board is the most rewarding experience offered here at the Club, and in the end, you'll receive much more than you give. The information packets, which include a letter of intent, biography and photograph, for running for the board are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 23, to Patti Cundiff.

Spring Break Sports Camp
Spring break is just a few weeks away. Avoid hearing your kids complaining they are bored with nothing to do. Sign them up for the Spring Break Sports Camps at MAC West. The camp is similar to the holiday and summer sports camps and includes tennis, racquetball, soccer, basketball, games and more. The dates are March 13, March 16-20, and March 23-27. Racquetball News
The MAC Club Championships will be held March 14, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Entry prizes will be given. Olympic format will be used. Please contact Shari Coplen at scoplen@mac-stl.org if you would like to enter. The championship is open to MEMBERS ONLY.
The MAC is investing in racquetball’s future by helping to host the 2009 National High School Racquetball Championships Thursday, Feb. 26- Sunday, March 1. Players from around the country will be at the Club to showcase their abilities. Courts will be unavailable these dates, but members are encouraged to use the Downtown facility. Therese Brady is Museum Services Coordinator at the Museum of Transportation. Affiliated with the Museum since 1980, Therese has helped the facility change and grow while developing a great affection for it. She will share both while bringing the FYC up-to-date on a museum that the Smithsonian Institution credits as “housing one of the largest and best collections of transportation vehicles in the world.” The collection comprises more than 70 locomotives as well as automobiles, streetcars, horse-drawn vehicles, a riverboat and airplanes. Among the unique attractions are Bobby Darin’s “Dream Car” and part of St. Louis’ Coral Court Motel. A graduate of Fontbonne University, Therese Brady’s responsibilities include supervision of guides and docents, fund-raising, budgeting, marketing and promotion of the Museum of Transportation.

Eat drink and socialize with the Apollos, the men's singing chorus. This is a great opportunity to sample what the Apollos offer- music, camaraderie, friendship and fun. The Apollos are the longest running Club Within the Club at the MAC and have been a tradition since 1943.

MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament Sign Ups Hoop it up at the MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament. All of the Club's basketball players are invited to play in the annual tournament. The games will tip off at MAC West on Saturday, March 21, in the morning. The action will shift Downtown for Tuesday and Thursday night games. Games will be held for the next several weeks with the top team being crowned the champion on Tuesday, April 14. Registration begins today, Monday, Feb. 9. Sign up ASAP because space is limited to the first 64 players. Click here to sign up.

Preservation Foundation Golf Tournament Save the date for the 2009 "Our Club Forever" golf benefit. The date is set for Monday, Aug. 31, at the Legends Country Club. Last year's even was a huge success and the committee hopes to expand it even further this year. Swim Team Registration The MAC Swim and Dive teams are preparing for the start of their season. All interested participants must attend one of two sign-up dates at the MAC West Poolside Cafe. The dates are Thursday, March 26, and Tuesday, April 21, from 4-7 p.m.

Lunch and Tour Group Outing The Lunch and Tour Group CWC, formerly the Cherry Hatters, will be traveling to Kimmswick, Mo., for lunch and a tour of the Anheuser Busch Estate on Thursday, May 14. The tour will leave from MAC West at 10 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. The total cost will be $37 per person if a total of 30 people attend. The Lunch and Tour group welcomes all ladies to join them.
